Laura is an author that loves to tell stories. She likes to get these stories from experiences and combine them with her vivid imagination. Stories are her passion, and her talent, which is why some of these questions were a little difficult for her to answer.

Even so, she still powered through them and gave us some valuable insight as to who she really is. You can check out her website here.

Based on our communication, I can tell that Laura cares more about writing and sharing her stories than anything else. She lives for other people. She’s not concerned with making money on her books, although I’m sure she’d appreciate it. She’s concerned with reaching her fans and giving them more than they could ever hope for.

Feel free to connect with her on Facebook and Twitter.

What prompted you to become an author?

I’ve always been a storyteller. Even when I was in Jr. High I would go around to the elementary classes at lunchtime and tell stories to the classes. I really never thought about writing a novel until I became hooked on reading mysteries and watching programs that involved crime.

Once I became a policeperson (for only six months), and a private investigator I became interested in working with the police on cold cases. The stories were fascinating to me and I decided they would make a good book.

What are your five favorite books, and why?

This is a hard question for me. I love to read and I like almost everything. If I have to choose, I can only think of two off hand.

Dean Koontz – Odd Thomas I love reading his books. He spins a tale of suspense and builds on it. Holding me page after page.

Robert T. Baker – Raptor Red – It was all about dinosaurs.

Who are your five favorite authors?

Sorry to say, I really don’t have any favorite authors, I love most all of them. I feel women tend to Romanize their novels and are less violent where if I’m in a rather angry mood myself, I’ll pick up a book published by a man for the excitement and the brute force, blood pouring out of a victim, bone-crushing reading.

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?

I find writing to be relaxing to me. After a hard day at work, writing at night gets all my frustrations out so I can sleep at night. This might sound funny, but I can take it out on my characters in the book rather than take it out on my family, friends or others I might meet.

What’s the story behind your first book?

My first book was a mystery. It was a cold case I ran across by accident. Yes, the murders were solved, but involved Key West, Florida and I found the story about a rich dud to be right up my alley to do my first book about. I only wished I’d had his money, fame, and the ability to go and do everything without worry like he did.

Why did you become an indie author?

I liked being in control. Even when I was a child, being in control of what, when, where, and how was always my Braille. My Grandmother always said if you put my father and me into a sack because we both we so hard headed she didn’t know who would fall out first. I do things my way, and very few can change my mind.

Do you have any advice for other indie authors? If so, what is it?

When I give lectures, I always tell the people in the audience to follow your heart, don’t let others discourage you. Everyone has an opinion to offer, but take it with a grain of salt. Do what you want and open yourself up to advice, but only take it if it seems right to you, not others.

What do your fans mean to you?

Fans are everything. I know I only have a handful of fans at this point, but every day if I can reach one person a day to become a fan, then think how many fans I’d have in a years time. If they tell one or two people about me, and they become fans you can see how my fan base can grow.

What is your best, most effective, book marketing tactic?

I’ve tried several methods and to be perfectly honest, I haven’t found one that knocks it out of the park yet. Book give-a-ways, Internet blast, radio, and passing out bookmarkers to people I meet on airlines, restaurants, stores, and bookshops.

I’m still waiting to hit the top ten list in the New York Times and with faith I know one day (hopefully) I have a #1 bestsellers that will give me a lot of fans to buy my novels.

What do you do when you aren’t working on books?

I run a full-time business called CMS-Credentialing Management Services for Physicians. I have one hundred and five physicians currently that I do all of their credentialing for Insurance companies, Hospitals, Medicare, Medicaid.

The physicians have to be credentialed (checked out) to become a provider for the insurance companies to be able to see you as a patient and get paid. This is what I do from seven in the morning till four in the afternoon. Completing all the paperwork for them to become a provider.

Not only to become a provider but doing the re-credentialing as well every two years most time. Most of the physicians I’ve had for the past twenty-four years.
