In many ways, the state of your home is a reflection of the state of your mind. Interestingly enough, this correlation can work the other way around. In other words, the state of your mind can also mirror the state of your home.
How does this work? Well, when you are very busy and rushed, you will notice that you don’t have the time or energy to keep your home as neat and tidy as you would like. As a result, it ends up looking like a mess and you are constantly trying to find the things that you need. In addition, you will always be thinking about how you need to clean up around the house, but you don’t have the time to do so.
On the other hand, when you are on the ball, and have a nicely cleaned and organized home, then you are able to easily find everything that you need. You are able to relax because you know that everything is as it should be. You don’t worry, or think, about having to tidy up. There is a place inside of you that is able to relax because you know that your home is exactly the way you want it.
Therefore, with that in mind one of the very best ways to improving your calm and focus is to organize your home. The most effective and efficient way of doing that is to throw out any and all unnecessary clutter.
The Problem With Ornaments
Many people have several ornaments and other knick-knack decorations around the house because they think that they look nice. You may have several items hanging on the walls and sitting on table tops. They adorn your tables, cupboards, and other surfaces in your home. For the most part, they look pretty good.
However, think about this, if you were to move, how many boxes of knick-knacks would you have to pack up? Do you really want to have all of that stuff?
The main problem with having all of the adornments is that the more you have, the more cluttered, and claustrophobic you will feel. This is because it looks like all the space in your home is filled up. You don’t have any openness around. In addition, light can’t move as freely around the room because it is hitting all of your ornaments.
Basically, you will simply begin to feel stressed out because there is so much information that you are constantly having to take in. You are constantly looking at clutter, dust, and things that you may have to move in the future. All of this weighs on your mind in ways that are both conscious and unconscious.
What to do About It
So what do you do?
The first tip is to go through your things and dispose of 60% of anything that is on a surface. Get rid of OVER HALF of the items that you have sitting around your house. Only keep the things that you really enjoy looking at. This sounds like it is an extreme challenge, but you will soon find out that most of the stuff you have sitting around is exactly that. It is stuff.
You will realize that you only really enjoy about 40% of the knick-knacks that you have around. Keep those and enjoy them. You will realize that everything that remains is a higher than average quality of item. That will increase your satisfaction and quality of life because you will always be looking at really nice things.
In addition, now you will only have to clean and dust around significantly fewer items. That will make keeping a tidy home much easier. This will lead to more free time and much more satisfaction when you are at home. You will find that your house looks bigger, and that there is more light. You will now be able to relax when you are at home instead of thinking about the next project that needs to be done.
One very important part of cleaning out your clutter is that you need to get rid of these items. They need to get out of your possession entirely. Don’t simply box them up and put them in storage. Dispose of them! Whether you donate them, throw them away, or have a garage sale is up to you.
Whatever you do, make sure that you get them completely out of your possession. In addition, if you do try to sell them. Sell them cheap! The goal is to declutter, not to make money. If you get too wrapped up in trying to sell the items then you are opening up a whole nother can or worms. Remember, keep it simple.
