Time Management Versus Energy Management
What’s the secret to getting as much done as possible?
For many people, the answer seems like it should be time management. If only you could manage your time more efficiently so that you could squeeze a little more free time out of your day. Then you would probably be able to find more space in your schedule so that you could do all of those fun and exciting things that you want to do. Right?
We see this all the time. People are constantly trying to rearrange their calendar or pack meetings one after another in order create more time. They are getting up early and staying up late in an effort to maximize the time they have. Coffee, energy drinks, and other products loaded with caffeine are a part of their daily diet. Some people stay up for hours, or days, on end only to crash for many hours later. All of this is done in an effort to manage their time.
The only problem…
They are exhausted. Not only are they exhausted, but they often don’t get everything done. This is the result of most attempts at time management. Therefore, that must mean that time management really isn’t the problem, or the solution.
What is it then??
Well, ask yourself why you haven’t been able to do all of the things you want to do. Why haven’t you started your side business? Why haven’t you fixed the house yet? Why aren’t you in the shape you want to be in?
You may be inclined to believe that the answer is because you don’t have enough time. However, that is where you are wrong. Time is not the problem. You have plenty of time. You have exactly the same amount of time that Thomas Edison had, Albert Einstein, Louis Pasteur, Steve Jobs, and everyone else in the world. Obviously then, the answer is not time. Yet what did these great people have that you don’t?
Think back over the past few days. Chances are that you had no shortage of time available. Perhaps you spent some time watching TV or a movie. Maybe you spent time slowly getting up in the morning and leisurely getting ready for the day. Or maybe you went for a night out with friends. You see, you have plenty of time. All of the time you spent doing those other things you could have spent doing the things you have always wanted to do. So what’s the problem then?
Energy is what all those people had, and it is what you need. The problem isn’t that you don’t have the time to do the things you want. It is that you don’t have the energy to do the things you want to do. You simply don’t have the motivation, or energy, to accomplish what you want to accomplish. This is the root of the problem. Of course, you also need to effectively prioritize the time that you do have. However, it is very difficult to effectively plan your day if you don’t have the willpower to do so. Willpower is directly related to energy and motivation. The more worn out and tired you are the harder it is to convince yourself to do things that require energy. As a result, you will end up doing leisurely activities rather than the productive activities that you have been meaning to do.
Therefore, you need to get more energy so that you will be able to effectively plan your day. You need the willpower and motivation to get you focused on accomplishing the things that you have always wanted to accomplish. That means you need to learn how to manage and optimize your energy. Energy is finite and you need to think about how you are going to get the most out of your body without burning out. You need to focus on getting more energy so that you will be able to effectively manage your time and get things done. So, where do you get energy?
Energy comes from your body and that means that you need to make sure to take good care of it. However, it is deeper than that. Yes, energy comes from your body, but, more specifically, it comes from what you put into your body. Energy comes from the food you eat. Therefore, it is essential that you are eating whole and healthy foods. By giving your body the nutrients it needs, it will be able to use those vitamins and minerals to provide you with energy, willpower, and motivation. Then you will be able to accomplish the things that you want to accomplish and you won’t feel tired and exhausted.
No longer will you have to strain to stay up late, or worry about waking up extra early. You won’t need caffeine pills, energy drinks, coffee, or any other unnatural energy source. You will be providing your own energy. Your body will be healthy and you will be able to get things done. The bottom line is that energy management leads to time management. Therefore, if you try to manage your time then you will wind up becoming burnt out, overwhelmed, and exhausted. On the other hand, if you attempt to manage your energy, then you will be able to effectively plan your day, and, in doing so, you will be effectively managing your time. Therefore, make an effort to start making healthy choices to help your body give you the energy you need.
